:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from FromHell -- Tsavo is not a place for a weak heart : This is a great look into the annals of yesteryear, when hunting was considered a sport rather than looked down upon as destruction of resources. the key in understanding the book is to realize that the hunter involved in the story is most likely one of the luckiest man alive since the death rate for Hunter seems to have been extraordinarily high at the time the book was written. the defense of hunting in the story falls on the fact that nowadays most supposed hunters in the African wilds rely on fully automatic weapons and military support from theirformer armed forces Safari guides- which makes the hunt less of a risk and more of a sadistic vacation. The story itself is a fun little piece of history, which is absolutely true, and has a Hollywood movie attached to it. I highly recommend both the movie and the book for those who enjoy Adventure in the line of tomb raider or uncharted. I also recommend understanding both in the context of the. They were set in rather than attributing modern standards to the actions of the main character. Simply put it was much more likely to get eaten by tsavo Lions who are known for their psychotic brutality in killing men then it was to bring one back as a trophy. The movie tells you the story about the two man eating lions. And the men who hunted them and killed them. The movie was joy from the beginning. The book was a disappointment. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from mtnel -- Certainly a different time : I had seen documentarys on the Tsavo lions and was very much looking forward to reading the book. It is a long drawn out read inwhich the lions are killed early on. The rest of the story is very informative in the sense that it gives the reader an understanding of how these animals were perceived as nothing more than brutes to be stalked and shot for seemingly no other reason than to acquire the bragging rights of 'I killed it'. I understand that at that time in history there seemed to be an endless supply of wildlife, plenty enough for everyone to hunt, if they so wished. But it seemed almost a mania to the author, it was though he HAD to hunt these animals (that were'nt maneaters) no matter how dangerous the situation, or who else got hurt in the process. I was fine with the killing of the maneaters, they were more than a real danger, coming into the camps in the dead of night and dragging men out of their beds to devour them. That is hair raising, but the rest of the killing helped me to see just how radically thoughts have changed (for most ) on how these animals are viewed. No longer are they brutes to be killed because they're alive, but they are now seen beautiful animals to be protected and left alone to live their lives. I have seen the movie but was interested in the true story which differs greatly. Patterson's other adventures became boring after a time and were hardly worth reading. It's the story of building the railway from Mombasa to Nairobi, which was troubled by two man-eating lions so cunning and stealthy they got a reputation for not being real animals at all but evil spirits. It's also the story of the last years of the old Africa, in which human beings were nothing special, just one dangerous animal among many others. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jimbo -- Good story but... : The Man Eaters story is told in a fairly no nonsense style and brings the horror of the lion attacks almost matter of factly but engrossing all the same. The rest of the stories didn't sit well with me as the author seemed to wander around the land shooting mostly for the purpose of skins occasionaly for food.I'm so glad we've changed our attitude to these wonderful animals. Seemed to be a lot of wasted paper in the production of this edition with large amounts of blank space and overly large book altogehter. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2011 )
